Packable, lightweight and breathable, a good windproof is a hugely underrated piece of kit. Often, when you pull on your waterproof to keep the mountain chill out of your bones, what you actually need is a windbreaker – and if you've used Ortovox gear before, it'll come as no surprise that they make one of the best ones we've ever come across. It's got a PFC-free water-resistant coating, packs down into its own chest pocket, and at 115g it barely weighs anything. A slim cut, elastic cuffs and plenty of stretch in the fabric will ensure a good fit, while the self-adjusting hood has a reinforced peak. But it's the materials that really put this one ahead of the competition. Ortovox are huge fans of natural wool, and they've incorporated merino fibres into the fabric panels around the torso. How to measure correctly?
